Friday Night Lights 2
Last year I told you about going with Susan to the high school football game and how much I enjoyed it. We went back last night, and I enjoyed it even more! The I had a ball because I was sitting by the two cutest girls in the stadium! They were about 5 and were adorable! They were best friends and when they saw each other, they ran and hugged and were so happy! And they were so sweet! They were curious about the oxygen cannula in my nose, so I explained that it helps me breathe. Then I took it off and let them feel the air coming out. They were fascinated! But I enjoyed sitting by them.
This year was different, in a couple of ways. First, Susan retired after last school year. She had been teaching for 30 years and she realized it was time, and she’s happier than she’s been in a long time. But she stays in touch with all her teacher friends there and even with a few students, and keeps up with what’s going on at the school. And as I said last year, she loves going to the games.
Second, this wasn’t just any game. This one was special to me. Susan’s Pearl Pirates were playing the Florence Eagles and my granddaughter Mary is a member of the Eagle dance team! So not only did I get to see the football game, I got to see her dance! I had wanted to go over to the visitor stands at halftime to see her and Stephen, but they wouldn’t let me go over there. But I texted with Stephen. I could see him and he could see me. And I got to see Mary perform!
I almost didn’t go. I had been at Susan’s for two days doing meal prep for my upcoming knee replacement surgery. We made several freezer meals that I’ll only have to put in the microwave. I came home to start making my house more “handicap accessible”. Moved things around where I can maneuver with the walker I will have to use for the first couple of weeks. Rearranged my den for the stationary bike they’re sending me for rehab. I was tired. But Susan called just as I got home and told me about the game.
As I said, I almost didn’t go, but I realized that I’m about to have very limited mobility for the next couple of months and if I wanted to see Mary perform, this was probably my only chance. They have a home game on November 4, and I should be walking by then, but it’s a long way from the parking lot to the gate, and another long walk to the stands where Stephen and Sara sit. And I’m not sure how well I’ll be able to negotiate the stairs to their seats. So, I went. And I had a good time!
As tired as I was, I told Susan that there are only three people in the world I’d do that for, Mary, Atticus, and Tatum! The things we do for our grandchildren!
