On the Road Again


 I’ve told you about my trip to Chicago to see the Cubs.  Well, we’re hitting the road again to go to Miami to the Orange Bowl.  Texas Tech will play the winner of Oregon and James Madison in the second round of the playoffs.  

Susan is a proud (and loud) graduate of Texas Tech.  Other than her children and grandchildren, Tech is the thing she’s most passionate about. She has an extensive collection of Tech swag! She lived in Lubbock for several years as a teen and young adult, after her father retired from the Army. Her family is from the area, her father graduated from Tech, and her children were born there.  So, there are ties, and although she was an “army brat” and moved a lot, Lubbock is home to her.  

She’s made a Red Raider fan out of me too!  I started watching them because she was a fan but I’ve gotten to be a fan myself.  They have a really good team.  A high powered offense and a dominant defense.  

We’re going to leave on Tuesday December 30.  The game is on New Year’s Day, Thursday.  We thought about leaving Wednesday and driving straight through, but our better judgement kicked in and we’re going to split it up.  After the Chicago trip, we realized we aren’t as young as we used to be and we can’t pull those 12-14 hour drives anymore.  

I’ve checked the weather forecast and it looks like there will be perfect weather. Highs in the 70s and lows in the 60s. I just hope my new “store bought” knee can hold up!  I think it’s still under warranty!

Angel

 No, not like the angels I wrote about earlier.  This is much different.  I’ll explain in a minute.  And I promise this will be the last post on this subject, but I need to write this for my own peace of mind. This is about the Angel of Death.   I’ve known Robert since we were 3 years old, almost 67 years.  We were two months apart in age. We grew up together, went all through school together, and even though we traveled different paths after high school, we remained friends and stayed in touch.  I stayed in Utica while he got a job in Saudi Arabia and lived there for nearly 30 years.  But no matter where in the world he was, he didn’t forget his old friend. Supper Clubs

 I read an article about supper clubs the other day.  When I was a kid, supper clubs were a big thing.  You never hear of them anymore.  Generally, a group of friends, couples, would get together periodically at one of the member’s home and have a big pot-luck dinner.  My uncle and aunt belonged to one for over 50 years. There was even a story about them in the local paper.  They started in the late 1940s when all the men returned from WWII. They were young married couples and none of them had much money.  They would meet every month on the designated Saturday night and rotated who would host the dinner. The hosts provided the meat and the guests provided side dishes and desserts.  They continued the group until the early 2000s when several members died.  My mother’s friends had a lunch group for a while.  There were about 10-12 ladies in the group and they would go out to lunch once a month.  They took up $1 from everyone each mont...
